This painting depicts that in late autumn when the candlenuts are flourishing, maple leaves red and green water like a mirror, a man is sitting on a rock with a flute in hand, playing music leisurely in face of the beautiful mountain and water. The whole picture is rustic and beautiful with green and flourishing forest and undulant mountain peaks in fair autumn. The vigorous stroke and elegant color of the painting belong to the bold and unconstrained style of the painter. It is a fine work of Shen Zhou in his middle age.


Shen Zhou (1427-1509), courtesy name Qinan, studio name Shitian, Baishiwong, was born in Changzhou (today’s Suzhou in Jiangsu Province). He was accomplished in poetry and essay. His calligraphy is vigorous and peculiar, and he is adept in landscape, people, bird and flower paintings with wonderful skills and an elegant style.
